FAQ

Who is compression for?

Compression therapy is most beneficial to those who travel, sit, or stand for long periods of time, are pregnant, have a genetic history of venous disease, are older, or suffer from any venous insufficiency.

What is medical compression therapy?

Medical compression therapy applies a graduated controlled pressure on the leg that helps squeeze the vein walls together, pushing the blood back to your heart.

Compression therapy improves blood circulation, reduces swelling by keeping the leg contained, and provides relief from pain and other vein symptoms. Learn more about medical compression therapy.

What is mmHg?

Compression levels are measured in millimeters of mercury (mmHg). This is the same unit of measurement used to take someone’s blood pressure. Learn more about compression levels.

Do I need a prescription to wear compression socks?

In Canada, you do not need a prescription to purchase compression stockings with a 15-20 mmHg compression level, and these can usually be found locally. However, a prescription may be required for private health insurance reimbursement.

For compression stockings with a 20-30 mmHg level or higher, a prescription is recommended. It is recommended to consult with a healthcare professional, such as a medical doctor or nurse practitioner, especially if there are medical indications present.

Are compression socks comfortable?

Yes, they are! Properly fitting socks increase comfort and keep your legs energized for all day wear.

How do I know what size to wear?

We always recommend seeing a Certified Fitter to be measured as they have trained knowledge on measuring for compression and can help you on your journey to choosing the best sock.

If one is not close to you, all you need is a tape measure, pen, and paper! Here is a video of how to measure for compression.

How often should I replace my compression socks and stockings?

Compression socks and stockings that are used daily should be replaced every 6 months to ensure you are receiving the proper therapeutic benefit. We recommend alternating between 2 or more pairs to extend the life of your stockings.

Can I wear compression socks to bed?

Unless otherwise prescribed by your doctor, it is not recommended to wear compression socks to sleep. Please consult with your health care provider and follow their advice on the use and wearing schedule of compression socks.

How often do I wash compression socks?

We recommend washing your compression socks after every wear. This helps maintain their compression effectiveness and hygiene.

Can I wear compression socks if I am pregnant?

Compression socks improve blood circulation and help in preventing varicose veins and edema during pregnancy.

Please consult your healthcare provider if you are considering wearing compression during your pregnancy.

Why are there threads inside my sock?

Threads inside your sock are normal and are not a defect in the product. In the textile world, these are called “tail threads” and should never be cut off. If they are removed, they can damage the sock. These threads are soft and cannot be felt while wearing the socks.

SIGVARIS GROUP uses double covered yarn, what does that mean?

Our spandex is first covered with fiber in a z-twist, and then covered again with an s-twist. This ensures that no spandex comes into direct contact with the skin. Double-covered yarns increase the socks' durability, protect fragile skin, enhance comfort, and make the socks easier to put on and remove.
